Slovenia´s gem

Slovenias gem at the coast - Piran

Slovenia’s coastal line is only 46 kilometers long and so tiny that many people don´t even know it exists. On this little stretch of the Adriatic, between Italy and Croatia is the very charming town named Piran, Slovenia´s coastal gem.

This seaside fishing village with cobblestone streets and red roofs, is probably the most beautiful town along the Slovenian coast. You can explore every corner of Piran in a few hours, but I do recommend staying for one night to soak up and enjoy the atmosphere in peace and quit.

Most visitors come on a daytrip. This means that you will have the morning and the evening to enjoy the town with the locals and the few that spend the night if you do.

Get up early to see the sunrise from St George`s church on the hill above Piran. On a clear day you can see three countries from here, Italy, Croatia and Slovenia. From the top of the hill the view is great over the bay of Trieste and it’s very entertaining to watch the fishermen in action at sunrise.

The sea surrounds most of downtown Piran. The Adriatic sea is crystal clear and clean. Croatia is there on  the opposite side of the bay from Piran.

The cobblestoned streets of Old Town Piran are like a labyrinth, peaceful and colorful with all it´s medieval charming houses.

The Old Square, built as a water reservoir after the 1775 draught, is surrounded with cafes perfect for coffee and local wine. Slovenia is a big producer of wine, but little for export.

Built to defend the town agains attacks the remains of the city walls are still here. The walk up is steep, but the amazing panoramic view view of Piran and the peninsula, makes it so worth it.

Dip your toes before dinner. In Piran everyone and all ages swim any time of the day and it is very entertaining to watch both locals and tourists in this town that has turened the sea into their swimmingpool.

With it´s strong fishing tradition the seafood in Piran is fresh and delicious. Plenty of laid-back value for money tavernas on the seaside promenade. Make sure it´s your last stop of the day because once here with this view, the food and some chilled white local wine, you for sure don’t want to walk any more.

The Adriatic coastline is rocky, Piran has invited artists to turn the rocks into sculptures. The Mermaid of Piran made of limestone rocks is one of them and a beautiful symbol of this charming town by the sea.

Piran is one of those cities which surprises you and charms you in no time and deserves to be called Slovenia´s coastal gem.
