Cartagena’s old city is the highlight of the city itselv, especially the inner walled area, which includes the historic neighborhoods of El Centro and San Diego. This part of the city stands as one of the most well-preserved examples of colonial architecture in the Americas, filled with churches, monasteries, plazas, palaces, and grand mansions featuring iconic overhanging balconies and tranquil, shaded courtyards.

The best way to explore the Old Town is by strolling through at a relaxed pace, soaking in the intricate architectural details, lively street scenes, and indulging in local treats along the way. When night falls, the atmosphere transforms, offering a completely different experience. de Indias is a city that brims with history, where every corner tells a story, and the vibrant, colorful colonial architecture adds to its undeniable charm. The warmth of its people is as inviting as the tropical climate, and the energy that flows through the city is nothing short of captivating. The old walled city, a preserved treasure from the 16th century, transports you back in time, while modern Cartagena hums with a dynamic, exciting energy. I've truly lost my heart to this place and from the bottom of my heart, I have never visited a city that felt so soul-shaking and exhilarating as Cartagena de Indias!

Gold made Cartagena de Indias a city of mansions, the Queen for the Spanish colonies and it made Cartagena to the richest and the most beautiful Spanish colonial city in the Americas. After the golden days Cartagena has had to struggle with civil war that lasted for decades, American imperialism, independence and the drug trade. 

Walk around in the Walled city of Cartagena, I did for one whole week and did not get bored. There is a 13 km wall around the old city once built to keep the citys population safe from pirates and invaders. The walls are more than just an architectural marvel; they are a testament to the city’s resilience and enduring spirit. As you walk through its cobblestone streets, you can almost feel the weight of its tumultuous history. Behind the fortified walls, vibrant plazas, colonial mansions, and churches stand tall, offering glimpses of a bygone era. Each street has its own unique character, with colorful facades, blooming bougainvillea, and balconies overflowing with flowers.

It’s not just the history that captivates—it’s the energy of the place. Street vendors selling fresh fruit, local artisans showcasing their handmade crafts, and the melodies of live music drifting from cafes, all make Cartagena feel alive. Cartagena's magic lies in its ability to blend the old with the new, creating a dynamic atmosphere that makes every walk a new adventure.

As evening falls, the walled city comes to life in a different way. The sunset casts a golden glow over the Caribbean, and the streets light up with the sounds of salsa music and laughter. Dining al fresco under the stars, with the city’s walls as your backdrop, feels like stepping into another world. The fusion of history, culture, and vibrant modern life makes Cartagena not only a city to explore but a place to fall in love with, over and over again.

Explore San Felipe Castle and Cartagena’s Lively Walled City

San Felipe Castle, or Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, stands as a powerful reminder of Cartagena’s strategic importance during the colonial era. Built by the Spanish in the 16th century, this imposing fortress was designed to protect the city from invaders, particularly pirates who sought to loot the riches of Cartagena. The castle’s unique architecture, with its complex system of tunnels, towering walls, and defensive positions, offers visitors a glimpse into the military ingenuity of the time. After visiting San Felipe Castle, a walk through the walled city reveals a different kind of Cartagena—one filled with lively streets, bustling markets, and beautifully preserved colonial architecture. The city’s walls, built to protect it from pirate attacks, now encircle a vibrant urban center where modern life blends seamlessly with the past. You’ll find an array of charming restaurants, boutique hotels, and colorful street vendors, each adding to the city’s dynamic atmosphere. Day or night, the walled city pulses with energy, offering a perfect blend of history, culture, and excitement for every traveler.

Best spots for sunsets and salsa in Cartagena

Visit Cafe Del Mar for the sunset. The bar is located on top of the old wall, it faces the ocean and is one of the best places in the city to watch the sunset together with great music and great cocktails. A cheaper option to enjoy the sunset is to the right of Cafe Del Mar, on the wall itself where local vendors sell Colombian beer and refreshments. We had a great time at Club Havana, in Getsemaní just outside the walled city, a fun salsa bar with live music and mojitos.

Street vendors, friendly locals, and impromptu music performances make every corner feel alive, ensuring that both day and night are full of surprises.
