Do not miss this

Visit Slovenia

Slovenia, tucked between Italy, Austria and Croatia is so small that it´s easy to miss.  It´s a paradise of snow-capped peaks, turquoise-green rivers and Venetian-style coastline. Slovenia enriches its natural treasures with beautiful architecture, great food, friendly people and charm.

Slovenia is perfect for a road trip because of it´s size, it is very picturesque and very diverse, it´s unexpected, elegant, wild and sophisticated at the same time. In addition to all it´s beauty, Slovenia is a budget friendly country where you can live the good life without returning back home broke.

If you haven’t finished planning your trips for 2024 yet, I do suggest that you pack your bag or suitcase and visit Slovenia. Here are some of the highlights of the country that I was invited by the Slovenian Tourism Board on a press trip recently.

  • LJUBLJANA

Ljubljana, translates as “the loved one” is Slovenias charming capital and often overlooked when it comes to a “city-vacation-destination” in Europe. The capital is according to the locals 2 hours of driving away from all the sights of the country. Ljubljana is small, charming and very clean. Ljubljana is so green and clean that it was named the “Green Capital of Europe” in 2016 by the European Commission.

The Ljubljana River runs through the Old Town and on each side of the river charming restaurants and wine bars are found. The streets are cobbled and the architecture baroque. Crossing the river are some very pretty bridges and the three bridges in a row, one of them named the Dragon Bridge, are one of Ljubljanas landmarks.

Slovenia is a country of castles and on the hilltop overlooking the Old Town of Ljubljana is the beautiful sixteenth-century Ljubljana Castle.

  • LAKE BLED

Lake Bled is one of Slovenia´s most popular and picture-perfect sites. Here you find emerald waters and islets with picturesque churches. Visit the mighty Bled Castle for the finest views of Bled island and the town of Bled.

Couples can get married in the church of Bled Island. Tradition says that the groom must carry his bride up the 99 steps to ensure a long and happy marriage. Lake Bled is a must see when visiting Slovenia.

  • PIRAN

Slovenia has a small but beautiful coastline only 46 kilometers in total. Piran, one of Slovenias most beautiful cities, is situated on a picturesque peninsula on the Adriatic coastline. The Old Town of Piran looks like Venice, only smaller and is packed with charming wine bars. In Piran the locals of all ages swim in the ocean at all hours and one really want to jump in as the water is fresh and crystal clear. Fresh fish and shellfish can be enjoyed overlooking beautiful sunsets combined with excellent Slovenian wine.

  • MARIBOR

Maribor is Slovenias second largest city and rumors say that it´s where the wine culture of Slovenia started. Old Wine in Maribor is over 400 years old and is the oldest wine in the world. It still bears between 35 and 55 kilos of red grapes annually from which wine is produced. Maribor has a charming medieval Old Town and charming streets with restaurants, bars and cafes make you feel very welcome.

  • GORNJI GRAD

In order to explore the cultural and historical heritage of Slovenia, a visit to Gornji Grad is recommended. The Cathedral is the largest and most important Baroque building in Slovenia.

  • SOLCAVA PANORAMIC ROAD

Breathtaking vies of peaks, valleys and some of the most beautiful forests in the world. On the Solcava Panoramic Road you will pass highland farms producing everything nature offers. Wine, prosciutto and fresh cheese. Stop for the night, for a meal or for some local specialities along the route.

  • SLOVENIAN COOKING

Slovenian cooking borrows a little something from each of its neighbors - Italy, Austria, Hungary and the Balkans. The ingredients are fresh and local and accompanied with terrific Slovenian wine. There is no such thing as a national dish of Slovenia, as Slovenian cuisine is so regionalized that hardly any dish is eaten throughout the country. If pressed hard, this cake Potica gets the award, it´s a cake all mothers and grandmother in Slovenia and abroad know how to make.

  • FREINDLY PEOPLE

Slovenian people are friendly and love showing off their beautiful country, the. With it´s rich history, diverse landscape, great food and excellent wine, it´s easy to understand why. Slovenia has the word LOVE in its name. I loved what I saw of the country and from the bottom of my heart, it´s time to go - before the crowds - it´s time to visit Slovenia now.
